Peace Like A River

I was thinking about the image of 'It is Well' where it says, 'when peace like a river attendeth my way...' and I was forced to wonder what is so peaceful about a river? When I think about a river, sometimes it is indeed a calm and gentle stream that we can wade into and float enjoying the refreshing cold. The sun shines through the the branches of overhanging trees and we can let go of any inhibition and worry. But this illustration seems misguided when down the way this same stream becomes a wild rapid where we are tempted to claw our way through the waters doing anything in our own power to stay securely above water.

If my peace is to truly be like a river, I cannot look to the conditions of the water as my barometer. The power of the current changes, the environmental surrounding changes, and I am unable to dictate or control any of it. It is in this powerless condition that the truest peace may arise. I am of course scared because I have no idea what the current will be as I pass around next bend, but I do find comfort in knowing who controls the current. I know that the journey of this river is one that is life-filling, purposeful, and loving. I know that this river is part of a beautiful land excavation project that I have the privilege of taking part in. I know that it's completely worth it.

Thank you Jesus for swimming way ahead of me and showing me how to trust till the end.
